death Investigation

WGXA News:

A week after children on a school bus spotted a naked woman near a rural Dodge County road the GBI is working to ID the body of a woman found in the same area.

GBI Special Agent Todd Lowery says Dodge County Sheriff’s Deputies found the body at around 1:45 pm in the woods on Jaybird Springs Road about 5 miles away from Chauncey. They were searching the area after a woman’s family reported her missing. Lowery says the decomposed body will be taken to the GBI’s crime lab.

He wouldn’t say if he thinks foul play is involved, but is investigating all scenarios.

PEOPLE!!!! Listen Up! I am only going to say this once!  If you don’t want it known, don’t do it. If you don’t want your family to see it in the news or on Facebook, don’t do it. If you don’t want to read it in the news or Facebook, don’t read it. If you don’t want to see it in the news or Facebook, don’t look at it. If you don’t want your children to read it on the internet, control their online activities.

If you are out in public, you are fair game to be photographed or videoed. If you are an Officer of the Law, you don’t get to demand not to be videoed. Law Enforcement Officers video people everyday without their consent and use it as evidence against them. Officers should know this.

If you are an Elected Official, you are obligated to keep the public informed. This does not mean you get to decide what records you want to share and not share. There are only a few things that are not “Open Records”.  Don’t get mad when I demand to see it.

Please don’t cry to me that your three times removed, half-brother saw it on the news or Facebook before you had a chance to tell them first. Especially when I waited hours to publish it until Officials notified me I could. By the way, I wait as a courtesy, not because I am required to.

Today’s world is not what it used to be. Communications today are a whole lots faster than they used to be. Twenty years ago, something could happen and it might be a day or two before you found out about it. Today we have cell phones, internet, satellite TV, Facebook, and numerous other high-speed forms of communication. Cameras are EVERYWHERE!! If it happens today, it is likely to be caught on camera.

You might as well get used to the idea that if it happens today, people are going to know it today.

There is no need to get mad at me for publishing it. I did not invent the technology, and YOU are the one buying it.

Dodge County Coroner Joe Smith released today the following update on the investigation of a body that was recovered earlier this week near Jay Bird Springs.

The GBI Crime has not yet confirmed the identity of the female body that was recovered on Tuesday May 27, 2014. The Coroner’s office will have to subpoena the dental records in order to make the identification.

” At this point, I don’t expect an identification to be made until next week” said Smith.

No cause of death has been released and toxicology reports normally take at least a week to be completed.

The Eastman Examiner will continue to bring updates on this story as the facts become available.

1 Car Accident Disrupts Water Service to 10 Homes in Eastman

05/31/14  A single vehicle accident, Saturday morning, disrupts water service to 10 homes in Eastman.

At about 9:45 am, a car traveling on Fifth Ave ran off the road at Creighton St., striking a fire hydrant. City workers initially thought just the hydrant was broken and could be repaired within two hours. After digging down, the crew found that the hydrant had been pulled of or broken from the main water line. Now they are not sure how long the repair may take. It is estimated that about 10 households are without water until the repair is made,

Luckily the location is in a spot where the break has several cutoff points surrounding it. Having multiple cutoffs in the area enabled the problem to be isolated to a small area. Had the accident occurred in certain other locations, many more homes could have been affected.

It is not known what caused the car to leave the road and strike the hydrant but Eastman Police Officers are investigating the accident.

Mr. Brett Manning, Executive Director, and Mr. Scott Jackson, GIS Planner, of the Heart of Georgia Altamaha Regional Commission presented a program on the Transportation Special Local Option Sales Tax (TSPLOST) for Dodge County.

Mr. Manning told the club members that only three Regional Commission areas of the state had approved the TSPLOST: River Valley R.C. based in Columbus, Central Savannah River R. C. in Augusta, and Heart of Georgia Altamaha R. C. in Eastman.

Maps and lists of the street and roads that were to be built and repaved were provided to club members.  A total of 10 roads in Dodge County and a total of 104 streets in the City of Eastman will be improved over the next ten years with the one percent tax that will be collected. During the first phase of these projects, (Band 1 2013-2015), Dodge County will have a total of 2 roads constructed or repaired for $1.5 million.  The City of Eastman will have twenty five streets repaved during this same time period costing $735,000. A region project also in Dodge County is the new 341 by pass around Eastman from the Cochran Hwy to the Hawkinsville Hwy will also be built using $6.8 Million of DOT funds and $1.7 million of TSPLOST money.

Mr. Manning reported that these first Band Projects should start construction before the end of the year. Speaking about the areas that passed the TSPLOST, Governor Nathan Deal was quoted as saying “those regions will see great returns on their investments and we will see those regions grow.  They are going to be able to put on the table the projects that will attract industrial development in the future.” Additional information about these projects can be found at www.ga-tia.com.

Dodge Sheriff’s Dept Projected to be $800,000.00 Over Budget

Terry Niblett

Dodge County Commissioner Terry Niblett, in a statement during the County Commissioner’s meeting on June 2, 2014, reported that the Sheriff’s Department is projected to be over $800,000.00 over budget by years end.

Niblett made this announcement at the beginning of the meeting, stating he wished the Sheriff would have been at the meeting. Niblett says Sheriff Lynn Sheffield, at the last meeting of the Board of Commissioners, had requested that a raise be given to his jail staff and confirmed that spending would probably continue at the same rate.

Niblett estimates that the over spending could result in a 2 mill increase for Dodge County Taxpayers next year.

Later in the same meeting, Niblett asked County Manager Bobby Peacock if the Commissioner’s office had received any money for any inmates that may have been housed here from other counties.

Watch the short, less than 2 minute, video segment for the reply.

The store, located at the corner of Oak St. and Griffin St. allegedly has been under scrutiny by investigators for making cash payouts from the video gambling machines inside the store. Hazlehurst fire

June 9, 2014

Dodge County Firemen have been dispatched to assist with a huge fire in Hazlehurst Ga.  According to WTOC TV in Sanannah , a fire broke out in the hardwood flooring mill at Thompson Hardwoods when a load of dry kilned wood was removed from the kiln. Sparks from the first fire got into other loads and has spread throughout the mill.

Firefighters from Milan Fire Dept, Cross Roads Fire Department, and Eastman Fire Dept. are know to be en-route at this time. Firefighters from McRae and Helena have already been deployed as well.

WTOC  TV in Savannah has some video footage, as well as pictures on their website. Check that story by clicking HERE.

HAZLEHURST, GA (WTOC) -

Multiple fire units from several counties are battling a massive fire at Thompson Hardwoods in Hazlehurst.

The fire broke out around 7:30 a.m. Monday morning at the two-story wood processing facilty that’s located on Highway 301, which is among the largest in the U.S. So far, no injuries have been reported.

Fire officials say the fire started when a load of lumber was pulled out of a drying kiln, which dries out the boards for shipment. He said the wind spread embers from that load to other lumber in the warehouse where the kiln is located. All the lumber in the warehouse burned, as did the warehouse and the office.

The fire then spread to other stacks of lumber, jumping from one to another.

Sheriff Bohannon says the Georgia Forestry Commission is sending a helicopter from Macon, about 70 miles away, to scoop water from a nearby reservoir to dump on the blaze.

At this time, fire crews are working hard to keep the fire contained by putting water on the pallets to keep them from igniting.

WTOC’s Dal Cannady is at the scene collecting more information from officials and will have updates as soon as they are made available. Check WTOC.com and WTOC on Facebook and Twitter for updates.

Video – Ga Election Board remands 2008 Voter Fraud Case to Attorney General

special report

ATLANTA — The Georgia State Election board wants state prosecutors to look at seven names in 2008 Dodge County voter fraud allegations, despite a plea deal that may have closed the case when it sent two of the people to prison.

State allegations vary among the seven people, including unlawful possession of ballots and vote buying in the 2008 general primary.

The board “cannot get out in front of a criminal investigation, which is what has been going on up to this point, so that is why we’re just now acting on these matters,” Secretary of State Brian Kemp said ahead of the unanimous vote.

In the 2010 plea deal, former Sheriff Lawton Douglas and Chief Deputy Olin Gibson agreed to serve time on 2004 federal felony vote-buying charges. In return, similar federal investigations into Douglas’ 2008 attempt at re-election were closed.

It’s not clear if the plea deal and the long time since the alleged 2008 infractions will affect what the state attorney general’s office can do, the office’s Russell Willard said at the hearing.

“That does not change my opinion about binding over” the case to the AG’s office, Kemp said.

tax increaseThursday, July 10, 2014,  Dodge County Commissioners met in a called meeting to discuss the budget and to consider purchasing two new ambulances.

Due to the added costs of the new jail, commissioners are faced with a budget deficit of more than $600,000.00 and need to find a solution to cover these costs.

Commissioners propose to increase the County Property tax by 2 mills. This proposal was voted unanimous with only Commissioner Terry Niblett absent from the meeting.
